Sliding into the Wickedness

This week I slid deeper into the wicked problems of my profession. I clarified and organized my initial thoughts, narrowed the brainstorm list to 5 intriguing possibilities, and finished by selecting a question to investigate further. Brainstorming my thoughts in the form of questions felt strangely liberating. The finished list felt like it was seeking understanding of something deeper, but what?

Step 1: Seeking Understanding and Developing Patterns

As I organized my questions looking for naturally evolving patterns the feeling that I was seeking understanding of something grew. By the time I finished the third grouping, a picture of my subconscious troubles began to form. In this video you can work through the grouping process. Now to narrow those thoughts to something actionable.

Step 2: Narrowing My Thoughts

I finished grouping my thoughts and listed 5 questions that I wanted to investigate further. Four of the five questions I listed were seeking to better understand my role and how I fit into the organization that I worked for. I reformulated one of the questions and made my selection.

In this ever changing environment what are my goals, responsibilities, and priorities?

Making a decision felt good and led to even more questions of why, how, who, and eventually a feeling of dread. Berger (2014) explores the question of "Who is entitled to ask questions?" He discusses the ugly truth that in some ways asking questions can be dangerous and strongly discouraged by those in power. While I know I have a right to ask (and in some ways answer) the question, I fear it may be dangerous territory to tread. We shall see.
